Better Barrels

Today, Kelly and I stayed behind in the arena while the rest of our group headed out for a trail ride. Ms. Wilson set up the barrels and got us working.

I took it slow today so that I could commit all the rules to memory. After all, slow and steady wins the race.

I picked up the following tips today:
  1. The rate point is the point at which you want your horse to slow down a little so that they can make the turn around the barrel.
  2. At the rate point, shout, "Ho!" I've been doing this for years.
  3. When running barrels, use short reins. Trust me, the long rein number didn't work.
  4. At the rate point, rest your outside hand on the pommel to hold you in place, and let the inside hand do the turning work.
  5. Lean back in the saddle to avoid being pitched off.
  6. Keep the inside leg on to keep your horse from slicing the barrel.

I felt much more improved, like my runs kept getting better. Ms. Wilson even told me so, adding that I look like a real barrel racer now. Working like this, I'm confident that I'll do well next weekend.

Fancy was so hot after the workout that I had to walk her down for a bit. Just like I like it. Warm horse at the end of the day. A sign of actually having done something worthwhile.
